Veterans Day

Veterans day was extra memorable this year at South thanks to our Veteran guests, Mr. Killough and Mr. Carney. A former Marine, Mr. Carney (Ruby's dad) served as a guest reader who read to all first graders at SHRES. He also had them do push ups!

What was your favorite thing about having your Dad visit 1st grade?
"Having my dad read two books to everyone!" - RC, 1st grade

Students and staff also came together to honor Veterans Day with a special Pledge of Allegiance. Mr. Killough was kind enough to stop by and lead the school in reciting the Pledge outside the building!

What was the best part of having your Dad come to school for Veterans Day?
"I liked taking pictures by the flagpole." - JK, 2nd grade

In addition to our special guests, Mrs. Cortina's monthly lessons in Prek-4 will focus on gratitude for all with an emphasis on our military personnel. Students in all grades will be coloring pictures/writing letters that will be sent to those serving our country via Operation Gratitude.

Catching up with ... PHYSICAL EDUCATION!

alt_text

From: Physical Education Teacher, Shannon Birckhead:

October was a month full of exciting learning experiences for our students, blending health, physical education, and hands-on activities. Our fourth graders had a fantastic field trip to Gravity Hill Farm, where they harvested the crops they planted when they were in third grade. This trip was a wonderful opportunity for them to dig up and sample fresh, fall fruits and vegetables while learning about the important role food plays in fueling our bodies. They explored how the bones in the human body grow strong through nutrition and physical activity. The students also had a blast getting up close with the farm animals—petting donkeys, alpacas, and a mini-horse, and playing with the energetic goats!

In PE, all students had a blast during our Fall Fun Stations Week, which featured a series of exciting physical challenges. One highlight was the new interactive Lu system, with which the students worked on their throwing skills in a cooperative game. The system registers each throw's impact, providing real-time feedback that helped students fine-tune their techniques. In addition to the Lu system, students challenged themselves at seven other stations, practicing various throwing techniques and testing their coordination and accuracy. The week was filled with energy, teamwork, and plenty of fun, helping our students stay active and engaged while developing important physical skills.

Artistic Updates

Check out these adorable monsters! Ms. Warchalowsky's Kindergarteners created festive monster art to celebrate Halloween. They also sang the song, If You're a Monster and you Know It, and the students loved this project! It was a good lesson incorporating a variety of mixed media, shapes, and creativity. Great job, Eaglet artists!
