Character Strong Book Club

As part of our new Character Strong curriculum, Mrs. Cortina and Ms. Corcoran are excited to kick off Character Strong Book Club during media blocks! 

They will meet once a month with students in K-4. They are looking forward to spending some time with each grade level and using these books as a fun and engaging way to reinforce important CharacterStrong skills and themes.

Each story provides a wonderful opportunity to talk with students about the trait of the month which is Respect. Mrs. Cortina and Mrs. Cocoran hope to make the book club interactive and meaningful while giving students the opportunity to connect the stories to their own experiences and our school community.
 

Below is the book selection for each grade level:

Kindergarten: We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins
1st Grade: The Smallest Girl in the Smallest Grade by Justin Roberts
2nd Grade: Do Unto Otters: A Book About Manners by Laurie Keller
3rd Grade: The Cool Bean by Jory John
4th Grade: Every Night Is Pizza Night by J. Kenji López-Alt

Dot Day Fun

International Dot Day (September 15th) was observed at South Elementary in Mr Meletti's art class. Dot Day is a time to celebrate creativity, collaboration, and connections through art. 

Students had the chance to hear the book by Peter Reynolds and had a discussion about who can be an artist (spoiler alert: it's everyone!). Finally, students created trees using dot markers.

Welcome Baby Butterfly!

We have a new baby butterfly on the way in the gazebo! Several third and fourth grade students dedicated their time to making signs and a protective cover for the chrysalis. 

This butterfly is part of a fall born “super generation” of monarchs that just might make it to Mexico! 

STEM classes will be making visits to observe and appreciate.
