Math Week

Students enjoyed daily activities to celebrate and enjoy mathematics in many ways. Here's a look at each day's activities.

Monday, March 9: Math is a part of art and creativity! Students colored a Penrose tiling. A Penrose tiling is a special kind of puzzle where two specific shapes are used to cover a flat surface—like a floor or a piece of paper—without leaving any gaps or overlaps. A Penrose tiling can look really different depending on how you color it.

Tuesday, March 10: Math is used in the real world. Students and staff dressed up as jobs that use math in the real world!

Wednesday, March 11: Math can even be found in books! Students read books that encouraged discussions about different math concepts.

Thursday, March 12: Math is a part of the games we play. Students in grades K-4 were gifted sand timers from the South Hunterdon Regional Education Association to complete fun fluency activities. That night, students returned to school with their families to participate in Family Math Night!

Friday, March 13: Math is fun and puzzling. In honor of Pi Day on March 14, students in grades K-2 completed a Pi Day Tessellation. Each student cut out and colored a hexagon to arrange a class tessellation. At first, only hexagons appear—but hidden circles emerge at their intersections, which remind us of what Pi is about!

A green poster displays a colorful tessellation of geometric shapes, labeled 'Mrs. McHugh's 4th Grade Tessellation'.

On Tuesday, March 3rd, the first graders went on  an amazing trip to the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa. When they arrived, students explored a new exhibit, Small Living Things: The Magical Art of Eric Carle. The children learned about Eric Carle's process of art and design and saw his original artwork.

In addition, they spent time in the art studio and completed their own collage inspired by Eric Carle's artwork in his book, The Tiny Seed. This trip allowed for the students to observe and connect with artwork, as they do with our reading program, Wit and Wisdom. It provided a hands-on and wonderful cross-curricular learning experience for all. Thank you, Michener Art Museum!
