Read Across America Week

Last week, our school had an amazing time celebrating Read Across America Week! The week was filled with fun activities, special visitors, and lots of great reading.

On Monday, we kicked things off with a visit from students in the Spanish Honor Society from the high school. Each class welcomed two high school readers who shared a story in both English and Spanish. After the read-aloud, they asked thoughtful comprehension questions and helped students complete a fun craft connected to the book. It was a wonderful way to celebrate language and reading together!

On Tuesday, students got to “Cozy Up and Read” by wearing their pajamas and comfy clothes to school. Throughout the day, classes enjoyed special “Drop Everything and Read” time, giving everyone a chance to relax and dive into a good book.

Wednesday was “Read My Shirt Day,” and we had a blast reading all of the fun sayings. Students also enjoyed a special treat when Mrs. Quinones and Dr. Miller shared a bilingual video read-aloud of The Dot by Peter Reynolds.

We wrapped up the week by showing our school spirit and partnering with friends from other classes for buddy reading, sharing stories and building our love of reading together.

Throughout the week, our school also participated in a reading challenge. Students tracked the minutes they read at home—either independently or with their families. Together, we reached an incredible 23,480 minutes of reading!  Way to go, Eagles!

Next week, we will announce the readers in each grade who logged the most minutes. They will receive a gift card to Farley’s Bookshop in New Hope, PA. What a fantastic week celebrating the joy of reading!

4th Grade was so excited to recently welcome Fielding’s mother, Lauren Braun-Strumfels, Ph.D., Associate Professor of History at Cedar Crest College, who led a special lesson on women’s roles in boycotts during the American Revolution.

Students analyzed the 1775 satirical engraving A Society of Patriotic Ladies, at Edenton, NC, and read a poem from The Female Patriots by Hannah Griffitts to learn how women protested British taxes. They then reflected on something they personally value and how they might encourage others to take action for a cause they believe in. We are grateful to Dr. Braun-Strumfels for sharing her expertise and bringing this history to life for our students!

Preschool Students Explore Medical Unit

Our preschoolers have been busy engaging in meaningful, hands-on learning as they explore our Medical Unit through the Tools of the Mind curriculum. Using mature make-believe play, planning, and role negotiation, children have stepped into the roles of doctors, nurses, veterinarians, receptionists, and caring family members—building language, self-regulation, and social skills along the way.

As part of our Parent Partners in Learning Program, we had the pleasure of welcoming several parents into our classrooms to share their knowledge and experiences connected to our theme. Our young learners were thrilled to meet real professionals, ask questions, and see how the tools and ideas from our play centers relate to real life.

We are so grateful to Mrs. Nguyen (therapist), Mrs. Sherman (nurse) and Dr. Rooney (pediatric dentist) for taking time to come in and work with our little scholars! Experiences like these strengthen home–school connections and make our Medical Unit come alive for our students!
