Omegaman & Friends

On February 2nd, South Elementary students and staff were excited to welcome Omegaman. This engaging assembly emphasized the importance of being a Dream Maker, not a Dream Breaker, and taught students how we can all be a H.E.R.O. by helping everyone respect others.

Students enjoyed the fun music and dynamic, interactive techniques used to teach these important lessons.

It was truly a special day, made possible through the grant written by Mrs. Cortina and the generous funding provided by the LAEF
.

First Graders Enjoy Submarine Excursion

In January our first graders took a submarine trip with our own "Ms. Frizzle", Mrs. Rutbeck-Goldman.  We visited the different layers of the deep ocean, learning about the types of animal adaptations and various creatures that inhabit each depth.  Our first graders learned about bioluminescence and how creatures living in darkness produce their own light.  We ended our trip with a chance to create our own bioluminescence with the help of glowsticks!!

Our class had a lot of connections, a lot of fun, and learned a great deal about ocean creatures' unique features.  This community engagement event was the perfect compliment to our Wit and Wisdom Module 2, Creature Features. A big thank you to Mrs. Rutbeck-Goldman (Ms. Frizzle) and her submarine adventure!

Fourth Graders Investigate Extreme Settings

A colorful drawing with text about the Appalachian Mountains, detailing climate, dangers, and facts.
Children's drawings of mountain ranges like the Himalayas and Rockies are displayed.

As a part of the ELA curriculum and within the unit "Extreme Settings," the SHRES fourth graders recently completed an informational writing project where they created brochures for hikers visiting a mountain range. Written as if they were displayed in a Visitor’s Center, the brochures taught readers about mountains as an extreme environment, including possible dangers and important safety tips. Our students practiced researching, organizing information into clear paragraphs, and writing for a real-world audience!

Three colorful handmade posters about mountains, including the Appalachian Mountains, are displayed on a table.
A colorful drawing depicts the Rocky Mountains with snow-capped peaks, a blue sky, clouds, and a bright sun.

Jennifer from Fisherman's Mark recently visited grades K-4 to teach students about the amazing work their organization does for the local community. South Elementary is currently participating in the Cereal Box Kindness Challenge. Cereal Box donations will be collected through February 12th and donated directly to Fisherman's Mark. Please encourage your child to choose a favorite cereal to donate. As always, thank you for your support!
