Parents in Publishing

Last week, two parent volunteers visited our 4th grade classes to share their expertise in the world of publishing. Students explored the history of books, learned how ideas become published works, and even tried their hand at editing a text. It was an engaging, hands-on look into how the stories we love come to life!

November Counseling Updates

Election Day: November has been a busy month at South Elementary, filled with exciting school-wide activities led by Mrs. Cortina. For Election Day, students participated in a school-wide vote using ballots to choose between two important character traits: resilience and perseverance. We celebrated the winner with a School Wide Pajama Day!

Veterans Day: We also welcomed many Veterans on November 11th, all of whom are family members of our South students. This was a memorable experience for everyone, and we are incredibly grateful to our visitors for both their service and the time they spent with our school community.

Buddy Activity: Later in the month, students participated in our monthly buddy activity, enjoying a “Gratitude Scavenger Hunt” to help build connection and promote thankfulness.

Kind Minds: To close out the month, on November 25th, students attended a “Kind Minds” assembly, where they learned how emotions can impact thoughts, behaviors, and decision-making. The assembly offered valuable tools to support emotional awareness and healthy coping strategies.

Devouring Books

First Grade had a wonderful time listening to stories about “devouring” books and making connections to our Wit & Wisdom Module “A World of Books”.  A big thank you to Ms. Palmer for sharing such fun and imaginative stories. This special visit was part of our district initiative to enhance student learning and invite families into our classrooms.

Lessons in Gratitude

This week, Ms. Lelie's Class at SHRES learned about Gratitude. Ms. D'Avirro, our student teacher, read "Gratitude is My Superpower." The students participated in several activities where they expressed their gratitude and what they are thankful for. The final project of showing gratitude was making a special snack for all of the amazing teachers and staff at SHRES.

After-School Enrichment

Cooking Class with Mrs. Rosso: Since mid-October, little Chefs in grades K-2 have explored the basics of cooking while building confidence, creativity and kitchen safety skills. Mrs. Rosso guides student chefs each week, teaching them to chop, mix, pour and work together! Students have focused on seasonal and local produce while collbaorating on recipes with simple ingredients. The class will run through December 11th.
