Hispanic Heritage Month

SHRES celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15th through October 15th. Special Area and ESL teachers collaborated to create bulletin boards and displays around school.

Ms. Pérez facilitated a collaborative project where parents volunteered to do a Read Aloud in Spanish in Spanish classes. The name of the initiative is "Leyendo Contigo" and it is meant to continue throughout the entire school year.

Students welcomed parent guests for read alouds in their classrooms. Ms. Nicole Morales read El Monstruo de Colores on September 25th while Ms. Samantha Nguyen read Vamos! Let's Go Eat on October 9th and Kitten's First Full Moon (La primera luna llena de Gatita) on October 10th.

Fourth grade students read morning announcements about National Hispanic Heritage Month, and Ms. Perez worked with ESL teachers to create an interactive world map on a bulletin board where students are able to identify the 21 Spanish speaking countries.

Mrs. Andraos’ and Mrs. Nedoszytko’s students had a wonderful time celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month at SRES. One of the highlights was a visit from a former student who is now studying to become a teacher. She read a Spanish book to the Multi-language Learners, and the students engaged with her by asking thoughtful questions in both English and Spanish. To end the celebration, students made  Mexican paper flowers, which  are an essential element for numerous fiestas and cultural events. It added a creative and cultural touch to the day. It was a joyful celebration that honored culture, language, and community.

Week of Respect

Students made their mark on Monday by participating in the Chalk it up to Respect event. Each grade level had the chance to decorate the sidewalks around school with positive, respectful and encouraging messages using sidewalk chalk (special thanks to the PTO for providing the chalk)! The goal of this colorful display is to remind everyone who enters SHRES that kindness, respect and inclusion matter everyday.

On Tuesday, classes worked together as a team to see how many times they could get "Bingo" throughout the week.
Each class used a bingo card with squares and prompts like being kind to others, using manners, playing fairly and other character-driven goals.

On Wednesday, SHRES welcomed a guest reader from the Hunterdon County Prosecutor's Office. On Thursday, students thought of people in their life who they found important, and on Friday, students worked together to dream up ideas of how to show respect at school, at home and in the community. It was a fun-filled week!
