Better Speech & Hearing Month

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, which is a time to raise awareness and provide the community with information about communication disorders and the role speech therapists play in schools.

Speech and language problems can occur at any time in a child's life. They can be caused by accidental injury, illness, or inherited by birth. Speech therapists help students with Stuttering, Articulation problems ("wabbit" instead of "rabbit"), Language disorders such as the slow development of vocabulary, concepts, grammar, and social usage of language, and Voice disorders (nasal, breathy or hoarse voice and speech that is too high or low). School speech therapists address all of these problems to help students succeed with learning and socializing with others!
First Grade Trip to Art Museum

The first graders just returned from an amazing trip to the Michener Art Museum in Doylestown, Pa. When we arrived, students were led through the sculpture garden and observed three-dimensional art. Then, the children toured the museum with a docent and examined artwork that showed emotion, landscapes, and focused on the elements of art.  In addition, they spent time in the studio and completed their own landscape using oil pastels, watercolors, and resist techniques. This trip allowed for the students to observe and connect with artwork, as they do with our reading program, Wit and Wisdom. It provided a hands-on and wonderful cross-curricular learning experience for all. Thank you, Michener Art Museum!

Field Day

Field Day was a wonderful celebration for our entire South Elementary community! Students had a fantastic time participating in all the fun activities and especially loved the inflatable course. A huge thank you to Ms. Birkhead, the PTO, our amazing parent volunteers, and the local fire department for preparing a delicious lunch and helping make the day such a success. We appreciate your time, effort, and support!

All School Buddy Activity

Perseverance is the act or power of continuing to do something in spite of difficulties. When we persevere, we show the stamina to keep going despite any setbacks. We do our best to stay focused and determined.

Not giving up when things feel difficult can be a challenge—but it's important to remember that we all make mistakes. When we do, we should use them as learning experiences. By making good choices and persevering through tough moments, we grow stronger and more resilient.

During our Buddy Activity on Friday, May 23rd, students listened to the story The Day the Crayons Quit to help deepen their understanding of perseverance.

After the story, students wrote a letter or drew a picture for a color they hope will never quit! Buddy Activities have been a wonderful way for our students to collaborate, build relationships, and grow together throughout the school year!
